I came to Madrid last Labor Day along with the rest of my siblings for a mini family reunion at the home of my brother, Tom Jensen. We are thinking of coming back this next Labor Day for all the fantastic activities the town has over the weekend. I even told my in-laws about it in hopes that they would consider coming down too. I was disappointed to see that Madrid does not have any web sites with info. on the Labor Day activities that I could direct them too. This might be an area for you to add to your "welcome web site" since it is one of the big events for Madrid.

Just wanted to let you know I came upon some 1933 newspaper clippings in my mothers estate that has a big continuing story of the search for John H. Grant in Madrid. He was married to marion glenn. His son ( my father ) Duncan Russell Grant moved to Thermopolis, Wyoming and worked in the Gebo coal mines until the War. Then moved to Coos Bay, Oregon where I was born. I now reside in Lander, Wyoming as a Medical Coding analyst at Lander Valley Medical Center. John Grant passed away in Madrid in 1933 at 77, funeral was at the Christian church. Internment was in the Mt. hope cemetery. My father never told me much about his past. I was just curious if any Grants related were still living in Boone county. Sincerely, LaVette L. Madrid,       This is great!  I really didn't know that you had a web site.  I still call Madrid my home after all of these years.  I try to get back to visit once or twice a year ... I lived in California 32 years ... Wisconsin 8 years and now I live in Michigan.  My mother (Verna ((Munson)),  ((Gibson)),  ((Alcott)),  as well as my sister Barb Burich and brother Bob Munson live in Madrid.  I also have a brother (Bart) in Grinnell and a brother Butch in Artesia,  California.  Madrid has a lot of history and is a great little community.  I really am proud to call it my home.  No matter where I go across the nation I tell people that I have my roots in Madrid.  Please respond.  You also have my permission to put this in thepaper.       Have a great summer,

Greetings, I just want to say that I like your pages. For those who do not remember me (everyone?) I can say that I was the foreign exchange student to the high school in 1988 (?). I have finished my M.Sc. in aerospace engineering at Iowa State University (1997) and recently quit my job at SAAB AB (http://www.gripen.se) where I was a radar specialist and tested the Gripen fighter in the simulators. Now I work as a veification engineer for a consultant (http://www.combitechsystems.com) firm testing trucks at Scania (http://www.scania.se). Madrid really is a super place to live (ok, so there is little to do but...). Enjoy it and look after it! If any one remembers me, drop me a line and let me know what's new.

I remember when I first came to Madrid about 10 years ago. My parents own the building in the middle of the town, next to what I believe is the public parking lot. I am amazed how this little town has changed over the years! I visited my parents this past Labor Day and it was Great!! I can't stress how different and courteous the people have been since my parents arrived there. Thanks so much for accepting them even though they come from a different country (Mexico) and having a different culture. Thanks especially to Don Martin and Family for giving us an opportunity to be part of this wonderful little town! When I was small I just loved going to the Mataya Drug store and buy all kinds of candies. Now that I'm married and stayed in Texas, I will make sure that my children know about your wonderful little town, and how the people of Madrid were open and courteous to our family.
Una vez mas, Muchas Gracias!
Hasta Luego! Su amiga!

Growing up in Des Moines we used to visit Madrid almost weekly. My aunt Mable and husband John Galetich lived there. I also had another aunt Margaret Flickenger and her husband Gus. I remember getting on a Greyhound Bus 1/4 block from our house at 5th & Madison in Des Moines. Mom would pay the driver and off to Madrid we would go. The bus stopped across the street from the Galetich house. We would spend the day there and visit everyone. We were warned about the hobo's that rode the rails. The RR was in their back yard. However I remember talking to a few and all were just guys down on their luck. Having enough of my cousins, Johnny and Tommy, we would return in the afternoon (just kidding cus'z). Greyhound operated like a transit bus does in the city does today.

Hi, I was born in Madrid at my grandfather's house in Zook Spur in 1962. My grandfather's name was Amadio Bettini - Curly to his friends, and he was part owner along with Emilio Santi of the old Zook Spur Bakery back in the 30's through the 50's. The bakery is still partially there on the highway south of Madrid. My mother, Amabile (Mable) Bettini, was born in Madrid on February 22, 1936 and passed away in McAllen, Texas on June 25, 2003 after a 7 year courageous battle with breast cancer. Madrid has always occupied a treasured spot in my heart.. I don't know what it is, but I guess we all long for the days to visit grandpa on the farm. I would love to hear from anyone who might remember my grandfather or mother. I would also love to have old pictures of Zook Spur and Madrid emailed to me.

Hi to all,
My name is Bonnie Wilson (Hively). My Father Fritz Hively was born on a farm just north of town by Thacher Johnson farm, by the river. He told me how he and his dad (Andres Jackson Hively) built the barn and fencing out of white oak trees and that they farmed with two big white draft horses. His oldest sister was Fern Berguland (Arvid) and the middle sister was Ruby Lincoln (Don) and step brother Eddie Shershack. I have fond memories of taking the bus up to Madrid in the summer to stay with my Aunt ruby who lived across from the "Bandstand Park". My cousin Lila and I would walk up to the movie theater with the fish pond and fountin in the lobby and then go to the drug store for a Green River. Eddie and his wife lived out at the big ballpark as custodians and we would have the best picnics and I still remember getting water from the pump-so cool! My Uncle Arvid and his son Darwin ran Bergy's Standard for awhile. My Aunt Ruby and Cousin Lila used to run a resturant a few doors down from the pool hall. I miss the town and don't have the opportunity to visit as often as I would like to but it hold a lot of memories for me.
Thanks for the web site.

Comments I lived briefly in Madrid in the late '30's and am looking for information on Hermie Strom. I lost contact with him in the'50s when he lived in Turo, IA.
I live in Olathe, KS and have been gone from Iowa since 1956. My family is all gone up there but remember Madrid fondly. Class of '44.

I just want to say thank you very much to this lovely city that helped us to film a TV program for Madrid, Spain. They were absolutely warm, charming and welcoming with all of us. We really had fun and we found a place, as many others in Iowa, full of wonderful people. We will go back to visit you. Thank you very much.
