Community Pride - - a Sign of Progress!
Ora Packard the wheel chair lift on the new van.
Madrid community residents can call (515) 432-5038 to schedule a ride on a transportation van.
Future meetings will also be held so that residents can learn more about the use of the van, where it travels, and how to schedule a trip. The van will be used for everything from taking people to doctor appointments or shopping, to taking children from day care to schools.
The van is wheel chair accessible and will hold 20 people in seats or 4 wheelchairs along with 8 people in seats. Boone County Transportation Director Carol Lundberg is excited about expanding into Madrid on a full time bases. Larry (Lee) Harstad will be the experienced driver. Harstad drove a 65 passenger bus from Boone and Ames daily while he worked for the DOT. He has driven in Boone for 4 months for Boone County Transportation.
The Boone County Transportation Dept. has a fleet of vans in Boone that are available for county-wide use. But thanks to the Madrid Homes committing nearly $13,000 towards the purchase of a new $50,000 van, a van will now be kept in Madrid.
Madrid Home Administrator Keith Kudej commented, "Carol Wilcox, who is on the Boone County Transportation Board, organized a meeting recently at the SAM Center and asked me to attend." It was there that the wheels started turning, and Kudej approached the Madrid Home Board about helping to get a bus in Madrid. "Madrid was under utilizing the bus system in Boone, and we thought this was a needed project in Madrid."
